Welcome to the public events organized within the framework of the COST Action international workshop, Narrating Hiedanranta: Stories of Objects and Subjects of Urban Places, held 8 – 10 June 2022 in Tampere. The workshop explores exciting participatory visual and narrative methods to gather, understand and retell the stories of local activists in Hiedanranta and their relationship to their sites of action. These events are open to the general public regardless of participation in the workshop and are free of charge. The events are supported by STUE.

On 8 June 2022, join us in Hiedanranta at 14.00 to hear about Luc Pauwels exciting Visual Methods. Luc Pauwels is Professor of Visual Social Sciences (visual sociology, visual anthropology and visual communication) at the University of Antwerp and has published extensively about visual research methodologies. Later that evening, accompany us to the short-film evening, Grassroots Stories of Tampere, presented at Raina Café & Bar starting at 20.00 where Elina Alatalo and I, will take you in a journey through Tampere to learn about different forms of activism unfolding in the city and the ways in which these grassroots actions are transforming urban plans, policies, and spaces.

We start the next day, 9 June at 10.00 in Hiedanranta, with a thought-provoking keynote lecture by Jeremy Hawkins to learn about the power of Poetic Practices. He is currently a teacher at the Strasbourg National School of Architecture on topics ranging from architectural language, to creative writing design, and narrating design projects and he explores how creative writing and poetic practices can impact spatial design processes, notably in architecture and urbanism, and how design environments can in turn influence writing done within or alongside them.

The outcomes of the three-day intensive workshop will be presented in Hiedanranta on 10 June 2022 from 16.00 – 18.00 in the makeshift exhibition, Co-constructed Stories.
