Confidentiality and data security

All data collected in the study is treated confidentially, in accordance with data protection laws. No external parties will have access to the data at any point.

Researchers collect, process, and store video and audio recordings (including images and sound) as well as observation notes from participants’ homes. The collected data is stored and processed as raw data (non-anonymised), to allow and ensure comprehensive analysis. The non-anonymized data can only be viewed and analysed by the project researchers and designated collaborators, who can only view the material on the researchers’ computers without gaining direct access.

All information and data collected in connection to the research project is treated confidentially, and stored securely, protected by firewalls, passwords, and encryption. Handwritten observation notes and consent forms are scanned and stored in secure systems.

Participants can choose whether their data is preserved for future research or destroyed after the project is finished.

The legal basis for processing personal data is public interest (scientific research). With participants’ separate consent, short, anonymized video clips from the data may be used in data sessions, scientific conferences, or teaching. These events can be organised on virtual platforms or as face-to-face meetings. Anonymization involves applying visual filters to prevent identification and altering the pitch of participants voices. Consent for these uses is requested separately on the consent form.

The data controller is the principal investigator, Julia Katila, who ensures that personal data are handled lawfully in accordance with the Finnish Data Protection Act (1050/2018) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679).
