We are looking for families to participate in a study on everyday interaction. We are recruiting families living in the Helsinki metropolitan area, Oulu, Tampere, and Jyväskylä who have at least one child under the age of 2, and where a parent (or parents) takes care of the child at home. The family may also have other children. The main language spoken in the family should be Finnish, English or Swedish: however, if another language is also spoken in your family (in addition to Finnish, English or Swedish), and you would be interested in participating, please contact us.
The study focuses on verbal and embodied interaction in the family. The aim is not to define “good” or “bad” interaction, but to examine how interaction manifests itself in relation to the family’s unique circumstances and the context that unfolds moment by moment. Interaction, for example, may differ in the morning or evening, on weekends or weekdays, when tired or well-rested. Furthermore, the study does not typecast or categorize the participants themselves, their personality traits, or their lifestyles; rather, the focus is specifically on their observable interactions.
The study employs a video ethnographic method to study interaction. This means that the researcher will set up video cameras and microphones to record the family’s everyday interactions on a daily basis for one week (7 days). On one (1) day during the video recording week, the researcher conducts on-site observations at the family’s home. Study participants are also interviewed regarding their experiences of the interactional situations captured on video. Once data collection is complete, participants may request access to the videos recorded of them.
You are welcome to participate in the study! On the “Researchers” tab of this website, you will find the contact information for the researchers responsible for data collection: you can contact them with any questions related to the study, as well as to sign up as a participant.
