Future of Gambling

The Future of Gambling project (2025-2027) explores gambling in the age of artificial intelligence. It also investigates the transformation of Finland’s gambling system, which is anticipated to significantly reshape the country’s gambling landscape and impact player behavior and gambling trends.

Gambling in the Digital Age

Gambling in the Digital Age -research project (2021-2024) investigates the increasing role of the Internet in gambling and the gambling habits of Finnish residents. A further aim is to examine the fusion between online gambling and digital gaming, and the risks involved in the new forms of games.

Non-medical grade cannabis use for self-medication

This research project (2023-2025) maps the domestic recent history of medical cannabis and the current state of self-medication use of cannabinoids in Finland. The project systematically investigates the self-medication use of non-medicinal cannabis, the reasons behind the use and possible obstacles to medicinal use.

Problem gambling and social media

The Problem Gambling and Social Media research project (2017-2019) analyzes youth problem gambling, social media usage, and online group processes. In addition, the project aims further to investigate youth well-being and other addictive behaviors, such as compulsive Internet use, excessive alcohol use, and drug use in relation to social media use in different country contexts.

Nordic drug dealing on social media

Nordic Drug Dealing on Social Media Project (Scandinavian research council for criminology, 2017–2018, consortium PI: Jakob Demand, PI of Finnish part: Atte Oksanen) investigated social media drug markets within five Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland). The project expanded the knowledge of online drug markets beyond dark web.
