AI is transforming working life: new book puts people at the center of change

AI Disruption at Work

Artificial intelligence is rapidly and broadly transforming working life across occupations and sectors. Our new open-access book, AI Disruption at Work: Employee Identity, Emotion, and Adaptation, examines this transformation especially from the human perspective: how employees experience change, adapt to it, and maintain their agency and creativity in the age of AI.

Written by Atte Oksanen and Iina Savolainen, the book builds on research conducted at Tampere University and the Emerging Technologies Lab. It draws on both longitudinal data following the same individuals over several years and cross-national data covering 12 countries across six continents.

The human side of AI disruption is at the core of the book. We examine employees’ emotions, professional identity, stress, self-efficacy, work engagement, and adaptation. A key question is what kinds of individual and workplace resources help people benefit from AI while navigating rapid change.

Particular emphasis is placed on human creativity and agency. AI can augment human capabilities, but maintaining independent thinking, the ability to find new solutions, and creative action remains essential.

The final chapter presents a roadmap for an ethical and resilient working life in the age of AI. The starting point is that technology should strengthen human agency, meaningful work, and well-being rather than replace them.
