About the presentations

Doctoral Students, Minna Kuusela and Tuuli Lamponen from Tampere University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Social held the posters in Eusarf conference All Children, All Families – Promoting Excellence in Child Welfare Research, Policy and Practice, in Porto, Portugal 2nd– 5th October in 2018.

Minna Kuusela`s poster Decision-making in Care Orders – Different Roles of Team Leaders underlined the role of the team leaders in care order decision-making. Her presentation showed the Finnish decision-making practice of care-orders resting on social workers and team leader’s discretion. She highlights the team leaders’ position and responsibility to assess the different types of knowledge and make the care order decision. Her findings suggest that the team leader´s position and distance from the preparatory work differs considerably between municipalities. Team leaders can be categorized as experts in child protection or administrative decision-makers.

Tuuli Lamponen`s poster Assessing the need of emergency removal of the child in immediate danger explored social workers’ assessment practices of the emergency placements in Finnish child protection. Her presentation underlined the assessment as a crucial and inseparable part of decision-making process, and one single social worker carrying out the both tasks of the process. However, the findings highlighted that the assessment and decision-making practices do not rest only on one social worker’s view but rather they rest on social interaction with children, parents, peer workers and other professionals.
