Sonja Lampinen, Olli Pyyhtinen and Niina Uusitalo contributed to an edited volume, titled The Presence of Exchange: GIFT in Artistic Research and Beyond. Their chapter is titled ‘What Remains: Translating the Absence-Presence of Waste into Video Art’, and it explores how the video installation (of the name What Remains?) created by the authors captured and enhanced the absence-presence of waste through sound and moving image and translated it into audiovisual format. The chapter also reflects on how the making of the installation was preconditioned by many kinds of gifts, such as materials and technology received and solidarity-based help.
The volume was edited by Denise Ziegler, Laura Beloff, Cynthia Blanchette and Hanna Vahva and published by the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland. It has also been made available as an Open Access e-book and can be accessed here.
