Helsinki Power Conference 2026

Melisa Stevanovic and Simon Mangusson

At the 10th Helsinki Power Conference, TalkGreen presented two papers on climate activism, policing, and the interactional organization of civil disobedience. 🌍⬇️

Melisa Stevanovic’s paper examined police–protester encounters during climate demonstrations, focusing on how police directives to dismantle protest tents dispersed deontic authority across institutional actors, temporal trajectories, spatial arrangements, and embodied conduct.

Simon Magnusson’s paper examined how climate activists in road blockades become “carriable” by withholding self-mobilization while remaining bodily available for police removal. The presentation showed how passive resistance is highly actively organized accomplishing activists to become movable without becoming collaborators in the removal.

💡 Together, the presentations explored how authority, resistance, compliance, and confrontation are not simply imposed or refused, but interactionally organized moment by moment in the encounters between police and protesters.
