About

Background

MilVerse4MDO (Military Metaverse for Multi-Domain Operations) is a flagship research initiative that explores how Metaverse technologies can enhance military training, operational planning, command and control, logistics, and post-operation analysis. Modern military operations increasingly depend on the integration of information from land, air, sea, cyber, and space domains. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), extended reality (XR), digital twins, sensor networks, and secure communications are creating new opportunities for immersive and data-driven decision-making.

The project addresses these challenges by developing a Military Metaverse framework that supports Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) and Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training. Through collaboration between academia and industry, MilVerse4MDO investigates both technological and human factors, develops proof-of-concepts, and validates them through real-world pilot cases focused on maintenance, logistics, and multi-domain training.

Goal

The overall goal of MilVerse4MDO is to build a secure, interoperable, scalable, and user-centric Military Metaverse environment that enhances military readiness, situational awareness, training effectiveness, and operational decision-making.

The project aims to:

  • Develop a holistic understanding of Military Metaverse technologies and architectures.
  • Improve situational awareness through data fusion, AI, and advanced visualization.
  • Support faster and more informed decision-making in Multi-Domain Operations.
  • Enable realistic and cost-effective Live, Virtual, and Constructive training environments.
  • Study human-technology interaction, cognitive load, and user experiences in demanding operational settings.
  • Strengthen the competitiveness, growth, and export potential of Finnish technology and defense companies.
  • Lay the foundation for a future ecosystem of Military Metaverse solutions and services.

Through three pilot demonstrations, the project will validate innovative solutions for field maintenance support, logistics optimization, and multi-domain training and simulation.

Impact

MilVerse4MDO will advance the development of a secure and interoperable Military Metaverse that enhances military training, situational awareness, logistics, maintenance, and decision-making across multi-domain operations. By combining artificial intelligence, extended reality (XR), data fusion, digital twins, and resilient connectivity, the project aims to improve operational readiness, training effectiveness, and human performance while reducing costs and risks. Through collaboration between leading Finnish research organizations and industry partners, MilVerse4MDO will generate innovative technologies, new business opportunities, and internationally competitive solutions, strengthening Finland’s position as a leader in defense-related metaverse, simulation, and immersive technology ecosystems.
