Growing into Literature: Advancing Theories and Practices in Literature Education

Akatemiahanke Growing into Literature: Advancing Theories and Practices in Literature Education

Our project Growing into Literature wants to refocus literature education on the acts of reading, the artistic processes during the reading and the aesthetic essence of literature and rewrite the status and role of literature education described in curriculum as well as in teaching materials. We will strengthen the focus on literature as an art form and on the paths that children and youth take into the literary world, including the emotions, experiences and issues it addresses. During the project, new understanding of dialogical and performative methods will be developed and elaborated based on recent research (e.g. Höglund and Jusslin, 2019; Lemieux, 2021; Nordström, 2023).

We aim

– to strengthen the theory and practices of experiential reading and student’s agency in approaches to literature,

– to develop a model of meaningful and coherent curriculum for literature education strengthening student’s agency and understanding of aesthetic values of literature, and

to develop art-based teaching approaches to literature combining both affective and analytical approaches to teaching literature.

We have three sub-projects:

Meaningful coherent curriculum and teaching materials for literature education

Experientiality and narrative agency in L1 matriculation exams and reading prose fiction of global phenomena

Combining analysis and affect: Arts-based approaches to literature teaching

Under construction, see the subpages.
