Research outputs and activities of the Supervisor

Research group

Internationally recognized research group at Tampere Wireless Research Center focuses on wide variety of radio/wireless systems and networks, and the related RF, digital front-end (DFE) and baseband (BB) technologies. The group has done pioneering research, for example, in physical-layer technology for 5G evolution and upcoming 6G networks, in digital predistortion (DPD) technology for linearizing basestation power amplifiers (PAs) and active antenna arrays, radio transceivers, in in-band full-duplex radio technology and other simultaneous transmit-receive systems, in terrestrial radio positioning and localization, and in integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). More recently, defense and space technologies are also of growing importance.

Research infrastructure

National Research Council of Finland (RCF) Lighthouse infrastructure FUWIRI, and its site at Tampere University, is a high-impact research infrastructure platform in the area of wireless technologies. The research infrastructure enables research, development and testing of new components and circuits, device solutions, algorithms, software and applications for wireless communication networks. Additionally, radio positioning methods capable of cm-level accuracy and associated radio frequency sensing/radar and imaging technology research and demonstrations are also supported.

Among the best individual assets is the state-of-the-art RF/microwave measurement, experimentation and demonstration laboratory, allowing for arbitrary waveform generation and analysis, as well as software defined radio (SDR) based demonstration and prototyping environment for example for 5G and 6G radio access solutions research, power amplifier (PA) and other component measurements while including also support for fast real-time digital signal processing in the devices. Signal generation, analysis and measurement capabilities cover frequencies up to 110GHz. We host state-of-the-art instruments such as Keysight Infiniium UXR-Series Real-Time Oscilloscopes, Keysight M8195A 65 GSa/s Arbitrary Waveform Generator, Rohde & Schwarz FSW85 high-performance signal and spectrum analyzer, NI Vector Signal Transceiver 2, and NI mmWave Transceiver System. The environment supports also true over-the-air (OTA) testing through various beam-steering and directive antenna capabilities.
