Briefly

Prof. Jarno Vanne (Computer Engineering): >100 publications, h-index 21; currently supervises 1 assistant professor, 2 postdocs, and 9 PhD candidates. He heads the Computer Engineering laboratory and leads the Ultra Video Group (UVG), which specializes in video coding, streaming, processing, and capture. His expertise includes developing semi‑automatic design flows that can be used accelerate performance‑critical visual‑media software solutions on FPGA and ASIC.

Research outputs and activities of the Supervisor

Research group

The Ultra Video Group (UVG) is the leading academic video group in Finland. It is composed of 25 experts in the field of video coding, processing, streaming, and capture. UVG focuses on developing visual media applications on a wide range of platforms, from low-power embedded devices to distributed edge cloud environments. It has created a world-class open-source library of vision-based processing tools for a plethora of practical use cases.

Research infrastructure

UVG operates a heterogeneous compute infrastructure for visual media coding, streaming, and processing research, comprising over 500 CPU cores across AMD Threadripper (up to 96 cores per node), Intel Xeon, Intel Core i9, and Apple Silicon platforms. The infrastructure includes more than 15 high end GPUs (up to 3× RTX 4090 in a single system, as well as RTX 4080 Super, RTX 5090, and RTX 2080) with up to 256 GB RAM per node, complemented by two Apple M2 Ultra systems (24 core CPU, 60 core GPU, 192 GB unified memory) supporting cross-architecture experimentation.
