Exploring the Future of Mobile Systems: Highlights from the DELTA Winter School in Finland

The DELTA Winter School on Dependable Intelligent Mobile Systems, held from February 12th to 14th, 2024, in the picturesque setting of Ruka, Finland, brought together experts and enthusiasts from academia and industry. Hosted at Scandic Ruka, the event featured a comprehensive program aimed at exploring the latest advancements and challenges in the realm of mobile systems.

The opening remarks by Riku Jäntti from Aalto University set the stage for discussions on topics ranging from security and privacy to performance requirements and navigation systems. Notable sessions included our coordinator’s, Aleksandr Ometov, exploration of the interplay between humans, security, and privacy, Tanesh Kumar’s overview of key security technologies for 6G networks, and Simona Lohan’s insights into seamless navigation for intelligent mobile systems.

The second day delved deeper into specialized areas such as U-Space concepts, drone systems by Nokia, and visual localization for UAV operations. Attendees were treated to practical insights into GPS spoofing detection and mitigation for cellular-connected drones, presented by Dang Yongchao. Risto Ojala’s presentation on A!ex, Aalto’s automated vehicle based on Autoware, provided a glimpse into the future of transportation technology.

The final day featured sessions on robust state estimation using Factor Graphs for positioning, presented by Petri Välisuo from UWASA, concluding with a comprehensive closing session.

Attendees not only gained valuable knowledge from the lectures but also had the opportunity to network with peers and experts in the field. The event not only provided a platform for learning but also offered a unique blend of academic rigor and practical insights, making it a rewarding experience for all participants.
