CLIMEQ – Cleaning, Surface Cleanliness, and Indoor Microbiome and Environmental Quality
CLIMEQ is a research project that explores how cleaning practices influence indoor environmental quality, indoor microbiomes, and human well-being. The project aims to generate scientific evidence and practical solutions that support healthier, safer, and more sustainable indoor environments.
The project investigates the effectiveness of cleaning agents and methods, probiotic cleaning approaches, cleaning-related emissions, and their impact on indoor environmental quality. CLIMEQ also examines the opportunities offered by automation, robotics, digital technologies, and building design to improve the efficiency and sustainability of cleaning processes.
Through laboratory studies and real-world pilot environments, including daycare centres and office buildings, the project produces reliable evidence on reducing pathogen loads, minimising chemical exposure, and improving indoor environmental quality. The results will support the development of evidence-based cleaning practices, innovative services and technologies, and new concepts for healthy and resilient built environments.
CLIMEQ brings together expertise from cleaning, microbiology, indoor environmental quality, building technology, facility management, robotics, and digitalisation. The project is coordinated by Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) in collaboration with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University, together with a broad network of industry partners.
Funding
The project is funded by Business Finland through the Co-Research programme.
