My name is Lev Denisov. I joined APROPOS as an Early-Stage Researcher in October 2021 at Politenico di Milano (POLIMI). I am from Russia. I received my joined master’s degree in Big Data Management and Analytics from Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and Technische Universität Berlin (TUB).
My research interests include high-performance computing, big data, and compilers. Outside of work I am interested in theater and music.
The title of my PhD is “Compiler Technologies for Approximate Computing” (ESR 8). The goal of this research is to automatically replace computations with their approximate versions where it does not affect the accuracy in a significant way. With compilers that can do that, the engineers working on computationally intensive applications will have faster and more energy-efficient programs without expending too much effort.
In particular, the project I am working on is concentrated on compiler toolchain that can automatically replace floating-point operations with operations on more compact and efficient number representations.
This PhD program is a great opportunity for me to expand my knowledge of the low-level programming and computer architectures. This opens many ways for me to contribute to society through academic or industrial research. I am very grateful to APROPOS and European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme for selecting me to work on this project.
