ESR Presentation: Tiago Troccoli (ESR 14)

My name is Tiago Troccoli and I’m working in the APROPOS project as an industrial doctoral researcher since September 2021 at the University of Tampere (Finland) and in tight cooperation with Wirepas company. I’m originally from Brazil where I received my master’s degree in computer science from the University of Campinas and a bachelor’s from the University of São Paulo. Previously I had a short work experience as Embedded Systems Engineer in a company in Brazil and Italy. I also was a teacher assistant for almost 2 years.

My research interests involve the development of solutions in embedded systems in the firmware field, which can include, for example, indoor tracking, embedded real-time systems, and embedded AI.

The title of my Ph.D. research is “Indoor positioning system in a wireless mesh network for sensors and other applications”. The indoor positioning system is a solution made of a group of devices that locates objects or people in indoor environments where satellites technologies fail to do so completely. The system must be energy-efficient and soft in real-time, which means, approximate computing must be applied to reduce the computational operations to be portable enough in embedded systems and it must be sufficiently fast to respond within a deadline.

Approximate computing is a series of techniques to reduce the computational operations in exchange for saving more power. More precisely, it exploits the inherent inaccurate computational calculations and sensor measurements of the system with the aim of lowering its computational operations, possibly decreasing its accuracy at a tolerable level, to save more power. Soft real-time means that the system must respond within a specified time constraint (deadline). If it fails to do so, the usefulness of the result decreases gradually with the increase of tardiness, but it does not cause a disastrous effect.

I am happy to be part of this project and to be a contributor to this research. I have always been interested in working with embedded systems and in developing innovative solutions. These experiences will de facto deepen my expertise in the field of computer engineering, at the same time, gain valuable work experience and broaden my knowledge of IoT communications and signal processing.
