International Researcher Visits Enriched Our Project in Autumn 2025

Visit in Viikinsaari: Rosi Enroos (left), Essi Julin & Jean Kjellstrand.

During the autumn, our project benefited from high-level expertise through three international visitors from the USA, the UK, and Sweden. The visitors familiarized themselves with the Finnish context and our research, while sharing valuable perspectives on developing parenting during imprisonment and social services based on experiences from their own countries.

In August, Associate Professor and social worker Jean Kjellstrand (University of Oregon, USA) visited as part of the training activities for the Parenting in the Shadow of Prison course instructor training. Kjellstrand also serves as a consultant for our project and specializes in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions.

At the end of October, we welcomed Senior Research Fellow Anita Mehay (City, University of London, UK). During her visit, she explored the activities of Kris-Tampere and presented her research, which focuses on improving services for, among others, young people with criminal backgrounds and their families. Mehay leads several research projects, including the Fathers Together study, which supports young fathers in prison and strengthens family relationships.

In November, Associate Professor Åsa Norman (Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University, Sweden) visited Tampere. Her visit was supported by the Foundation for Life Without Crime, with whom we also organized a webinar. In the webinar, Norman presented a parenting intervention implemented in Swedish prisons and shared research in Sweden, which focuses on developing social services for children and families experiencing parental imprisonment.

We are extremely pleased with the international interest and connections that this research project has sparked!
