How did war affect the soldiers who experienced it?
During World War II, about 800,000 Finnish men served in the army. Almost 100,000 of them died for war-related causes and the same amount suffered a permanent injury.
In the research project “Unequal War,” we study the distribution of violence and stress in the army as well as the soldiers’ paths of survival. What were the dynamics that led to different war experiences and to varying degrees of vulnerability?
In UnWar, we have gathered a uniquely representative “Finnish Army in World War II” research database, collected from the military service record collections at the National Archives of Finland.
