Olga Jitlina and Anna Tereshkina, members of the research project “Spaces of Justice Across the East-West Divide”, organized a workshop on sewing karamas, colorful Tajik handicrafts, at Rosa’s House of Culture, St. Petersburg in April 2017.
At the workshop, Safina Hidjobova told about technical skills needed to make karama, where it is used and what traditions are connected with it.
Collective sewing provided a fruitful setting to have a conversation about contemporary changes in our societies and how people relate to traditions in the context of migration.
This event was one of the preparatory steps in Olga and Anna’s subproject the task of which is to prepare a new edition of the Hodja Nasreddin newspaper.
