This exhibition “Kaivos Työnä / Kaivos Jälkinä / Kaivos Uhkana” (“Mine as Labour / Mine as Traces / Mine as a Threat”) explores mining and extractivism through their relationship with the locality: its collective memory, lived reality, and its uncertain future. Through extraction, the heavy, solid body of ore is brought to the surface, crushed into dust, chemically separated and purified, melted, reshaped, and shipped around the world. The locality is left with the aftermath: both the prosperity that the extraction brought and the toxicity of a highly polluting and invasive process. This exhibition focuses on three mining sites in Finland: the operating Kevitsa mine in Sodankylä, the closed Outokumpu mine, and the planned Sakatti mine beneath Viiankiaapa bog.
