The Nordic Network for Genetic Counselling met in Uppsala to continue planning the Joint Nordic Master’s Programme in Genetic Counselling and to strengthen collaboration across the region. The meeting provided an important opportunity to engage existing partners, welcome new collaborators, and discuss the future development of genetic counselling education in the Nordic countries.
The network was pleased to welcome Estonia as a new member of the planning group and the wider network. In addition, the Faroe Islands joined the network, further broadening regional cooperation.
For the first time, Nordic societies representing genetic professionals were invited to participate in the discussions. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the network’s plans for establishing a Nordic training programme in genetic counselling and to gather input from key stakeholders. Representatives from societies in Sweden, Norway, and Estonia joined the discussions online. The network was greatly encouraged by the support expressed for the initiative. In addition, participants provided useful feedback and valuable insights that will help guide the next stages of programme development. The positive engagement from these professional communities reinforces the importance of the network’s work and strengthens confidence in achieving our shared goals
During the meeting, we received positive news from Norway. All Departments of Medical Genetics in Norwegian university hospitals have expressed their willingness to collaborate with us by contributing to teaching and supervising students. The process is now moving forward with the development of agreements with these departments.
Planning of the programme continues according to schedule, with the aim of welcoming the first cohort of students in autumn 2028. The growing network and the strong commitment demonstrated by partners and stakeholders provide a solid foundation for achieving this goal and advancing genetic counselling education across the Nordic and Baltic region.
