The study - Introduction

This Study is a final report highlighting key policy recommendations developed from research analyses carried out by the Equal Treatment project consortium.

Three research methodologies were used to identify at European and national levels the good practices, legal and policy framework, challenges and gaps in equal rights and access of persons with intellectual disabilities to secondary and tertiary healthcare:

  1. Collection of good practices;
  2. Literature review and;
  3. Stakeholder needs analysis.

Providing a framework of related global and European policies, this report develops policy recommendations from the research findings, aimed at improving the access of persons with intellectual disabilities to secondary and tertiary healthcare. In order to elaborate this study, both the project consortium and the project’s Policy Advisory Board were involved by providing their feedback expertise.

The outcomes of the analysis highlight the pressing need for policy adjustments to be made at all levels in secondary and tertiary healthcare services requiring a coordinated, partnership approach.
