Immersing in Web Engineering: A Doctoral Researcher's Experience as a Conference Assistant at ICWE 2024

Attending the International Conference on Web Engineering 2024 broadened CONVERGENCE Doctoral Student Reza Shafiloo's understanding of web engineering and enhanced his research perspective. Additionally, he made new connections and gathered ideas for future collaborations.

CONVERGENCE Doctoral Student Reza Shafiloo served as a Conference Assistant at the International Conference on Web Engineering 2024, held at Tampere University on 17-20 June, 2024.

“It was an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in cutting-edge discussions and network with pioneers in the field of web engineering,” Reza shares.

As a conference assistant at the registration desk, Reza ensured smooth and efficient check-ins, greeted attendees warmly, managed registration materials, and provided essential information to create a welcoming and organized experience for all participants.

The conference was a whirlwind of knowledge sharing, offering Reza the chance to participate in talks and paper presentations. He was particularly captivated by the sessions on recommender systems, a topic closely related to his PhD thesis on explainability and fairness in recommender systems.

“I attended the recommender systems sessions, which were highly relevant to my PhD thesis. I learned how attention-based neural networks could be utilized in these systems, providing valuable insights for my own research,” Reza explains. These insights have enriched his research perspective and will undoubtedly influence his future work.

“A heartfelt thank you to Kostas Stefanidis, Maristella Matera, Sebastian Heil, Tobias Münch, Antti Sand, Zheying Zhang, Kari Systä, and Martin Gaedke for organizing such an inspiring event. Your dedication and hard work created a fantastic platform for learning and collaboration,” Reza expresses his gratitude.

He also extends his thanks to all the wonderful volunteers whose efforts made the conference a seamless and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Connecting with fellow researchers and professionals has been invigorating for Reza, and he is excited to apply the knowledge gained to further his research and professional growth.
