CONVERGENCE Doctoral Research Kalle Lahtinen took part in the 38th Finnic Phonetics Symposium (Fonetiikan päivät) hosted by Aalto University in Otaniemi, Espoo. This was the third time Kalle took part in the conference.
The Finnic Phonetics Symposium is a conference series aiming to provide a forum for scientists and students of phonetics and speech technology to present and discuss recent research and development in spoken language communication. The symposium offers oral and poster presentations from a range of speech and phonetics-related topics such as language learning, speech therapy and speech modeling.
Kalle gave a presentation about the latest achievements in his doctoral studies, based on work done together with Kalle’s supervisors Liisa Mustanoja and Okko Räsänen. Kalle presented the results of a study exploring the importance of different acoustic-phonetic (based on speech audio data) and content-related (based on speech transcription data) features for the human perception of emotional valence and arousal in spontaneous Finnish speech. The study was based on the FinnAffect speech corpus introduced by Lahtinen et al. in 2025.
