The event provided a unique opportunity for doctoral researchers, supervisors, and members of the wider research community to reflect on the realities of interdisciplinary research. While convergence is often discussed at the level of strategies, policies, and institutional goals, this event shifted the focus toward the experiences of researchers who navigate disciplinary boundaries every day.
Bringing Diverse Perspectives Together
The afternoon began with welcome words and project updates, providing participants with an overview of recent developments and the current status of the CONVERGENCE initiative. Following the introduction, the spotlight turned to the doctoral researchers themselves.
The central panel discussion, “Real Convergence Experiences of Doctoral Researchers,” offered honest and insightful perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of conducting research across traditional disciplinary borders. Panelists shared how encounters with colleagues from different research cultures have influenced their work, inspired new research directions, and helped them tackle complex questions that no single discipline could fully address alone.
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of openness, curiosity, and communication. Participants reflected on the practical realities of interdisciplinary collaborations, including learning new research languages, aligning methodologies, and navigating different academic expectations. At the same time, they highlighted the significant benefits of these collaborations, from broader perspectives and stronger research outcomes to entirely new avenues for scientific discovery.
Open Conversation and Community Learning
The event was intentionally designed to encourage active participation. In addition to the panel discussion, attendees were invited to contribute their own experiences, questions, and reflections through an open discussion format.
The conversations demonstrated that while interdisciplinary research can be challenging, many doctoral researchers encounter similar questions regardless of their specific fields. The exchange of experiences created valuable opportunities for peer learning and strengthened connections across research communities within the university.
Looking Ahead
The event concluded with closing remarks and updates on upcoming CONVERGENCE activities. Beyond the formal programme, the discussions reinforced the value of creating spaces where researchers can openly share both successes and challenges related to convergence research.
One of the strongest messages from the afternoon was clear: interdisciplinary collaboration is not merely about combining expertise from different fields. It is about creating environments where diverse perspectives can interact productively, generating ideas and opportunities that would otherwise remain undiscovered.
We would like to thank all panelists, participants, and contributors for their openness, enthusiasm, and willingness to share their experiences. Their reflections provided valuable insights into how convergence research is practiced in reality and how it can continue to evolve in the future.
As the CONVERGENCE project progresses, these conversations will remain essential for fostering a vibrant research community capable of addressing increasingly complex societal and scientific challenges through collaboration across disciplines.
