Hands-on Standardisation Communication Activities: Convergence at DELTA Winter School

Delta Ruka 2025

From February 10th to 12th, 2025, CONVERGENCE had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Ruka Winter School, an event dedicated to the latest advancements in communication technologies.

The Winter School kicked off with insightful lectures from academic speakers and experts from Wirepas, who introduced mesh networks and DECT NR+ technology. The discussions deepened as participants explored dependable communication, real-time mesh networking, and industrial modeling led by SEW Eurodrive and FonLabs. These sessions provided a solid theoretical foundation while offering valuable perspectives on real-world applications. The event was organised by DELTA and USWA actions.

A highlight of the event was the hands-on demo sessions, where students worked with custom hardware and software-defined radio (SDR) implementations. The practical work involved setting up an IoT network using Wirepas technology and testing low-latency audio and video transmission with DECT NR+. These activities reinforced theoretical knowledge with tangible, real-world applications, preparing students for future innovations in industrial automation and IoT.

Beyond lectures and technical sessions, the Winter School emphasized networking and outdoor activities, including skiing breaks and group dinners. These informal settings allowed students to interact with experts, discuss research ideas, and build valuable professional connections in a relaxed environment.

Attending the Ruka Winter School was an enriching experience. The students gained a deeper understanding of wireless communication technologies, explored emerging trends in DECT NR+, and enhanced their skills through practical exercises. As they return, they bring back new knowledge and inspiration to further research and development in exploitation and standardization.
