Supporting physical activity and functional capacity among older caregivers (CAREFIT)
Caregivers play a significant role in our society, where the need for care for the aging population is increasing.
Caregiving is a cost-effective form of care for society, often allowing for individualized care that meets the needs of the care recipient. However, it can also burden aging caregivers. Studies show that caregivers’ health can deteriorate due to caregiving responsibilities, especially as the demands of care increase.
The CAREFIT project investigates how physical activity can improve the health and functional capacity of caregivers. The project also examines what kind of physical activity can be integrated into caregiving situations, affecting caregivers’ participation in lifestyle programs. Supporting caregivers’ well-being can potentially reduce healthcare costs and improve the quality of care.
According to Carers Finland association there are approximately 350,000 people in Finland who bear the primary responsibility for the care of their loved ones. Informal caregivers represent a diverse group of individuals, bound by caregiving in various ways. We want to bring visibility to the caregivers and together seek ways to best support their health and well-being. The CAREFIT project is carried out in close collaboration with the Tampere University, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the University of Eastern Finland, Carers Finland and Karolinska Istitutet.
