International network in the Construction and Real Estate Industry field gathers in Finland

Group of people from AI Champion project.
AI Champion project members gathered kick-off meeting on January 2026.

AI Champion project members will gather for an international conference in Helsinki, and project leader Piia Sormunen will coordinate a separate workshop on the topic of AI in Construction.

The world’s first conference focusing on artificial intelligence in the built environment, Artificial Intelligence in Architecture, Engineering and Construction, will be held once again in Helsinki on March 18–19 organised by RIL.

AI in AEC 2026 brings together AI experts, industry professionals, researchers, and anyone interested in the field to discuss the future of AI in architecture, engineering, and construction. Representatives of the AI Champion project will also participate in the conference as speakers. We recommend that conference attendees check out sessions four and eight. The leader of the AI Champion project, Professor Piia Sormunen, and Postdoctoral Researcher Osku Torro will give a presentation on the topic: Standardized Data and Artificial Intelligence as Enablers of Data Economy in Building Services Engineering.

Research Director Tommi Arola from the Building Information Foundation, Development Director Tero Järvinen from Granlund, and Housing Development Director Otto Alhava from Fira will speak on the topic: How Knowledge Graphs Align AEC Product Data to Speak AI?

In 2025, the conference attracted over 320 participants from 32 countries.

The AI in Construction workshop is open to everyone – come and join us!

The AI Applications in Construction workshop will be held at the same time as the conference, but as a separate event. The CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) task group, led by Professor Piia Sormunen, is coordinating the workshop for the first time, with the aim of providing a forum for dialogue and the sharing of views. The main goal is to create a unique global collaboration network around artificial intelligence used in the construction industry.

The workshop is open and free to everyone online and on-site for the conference visitors. Register now online and welcome to participate on March 19 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
