Introducing Piia Sormunen

"AI Champion brings Artificial Intelligence to the centre of Building Services and boosts the entire industry's competitiveness."

The Business Finland funded Co-Innovation project AI Champion - receiving a total of 20 million in funding - has officially started. But who are the driving forces behind this groundbreaking project and what are their roles?

We start the project team introductions with Tampere University’s Associate Professor Piia Sormunen, who leads the entire project coordination team and is responsible for implementing the Tampere University research as the responsible director.

Piia builds the project’s interdisciplinary research environment together with responsible researchers from different faculties. Together, they guide research and business cooperation towards improving the productivity of the building services industry.

Piia strongly believes that AI Champion can create a permanent AI hub for construction in Finland, which will strengthen the industry’s international competitiveness and create unprecedented business opportunities for both the construction industry and AI companies.

“What I look forward to the most is creating a unified, AI‑driven data economy model for the building services sector—one that finally eliminates the data gaps that have burdened our supply chains for decades.”

In the Business Finland funded AI Champion Co-Innovation project, we aim to find out the design and construction challenges in Building Services and create a 100 AI Agents to solve these challenges and enhance the supply chains. Co-operators and funders in AI Champion are Tampere University, University of Oulu, Granlund, Fira, Koja Chiller, ETS NORD, Kiilto, GF BFS, Nimlas, LVI-INFO, Sähköteknisen Kaupan Liitto ry and Airlyse.
